Are All Goths Satanists ?

Ah - the classic Goth stereotype ! A Goth is someone who sees beauty in the dark side of life and embracing darkness is looked down upon in today’s society - as it is associated with evil. However this leaves us wondering…

How did the gothic subculture get associated with devil-worshipping ?

Well, it’s not uncommon for people to be terrified of things they don’t understand.

Goths find beauty in the gloomy and twisted parts of life when today’s society associates darkness with evil. Have you ever wondered why the villains in movies tend to have dark hair ?

The Gothic aesthetic also relies heavily on -often misinterpreted- symbols, such as the pentagram ( present in pagan and esoteric literature ),the triple moon ( wiccan symbolism ) or the hexagram ( used by Muslims, Jews, Christians  as well as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.)

Some of those symbols happened to be repurposed by satanist literature hence their reputation but didn’t originate from it.

The infamous inverted cross, also named  “Cross of Saint Peter” is actually a Christian symbol - later reused by Satanists and given the meaning of “rejecting christ”.

Finally, well-known artists associated with the Gothic subculture have used  satanic imagery profusely for shock factor - such as Marylin Manson. Thus, all goths became “guilty by association” in the public eye.

Just the term "satanism" is controversial. But what's actually going on with this counter-culture religion ?

Contrary to popular beliefs, Satanists do not burn down churches or condone animal sacrifices, not worship the devil - they are ordinary people who don’t believe in a higher god. Their beliefs are centered around “individuality” as they believe they are their own god meaning they are responsible for their own actions in life.

What do goths really believe in ?

There isn’t a religious aspect to the Gothic movement as it’s mostly musical and cultural , therefore Goths are of all religions and walks of life : pagan, agnostic, atheist, satanists and Christians… and not limited to that.

However, if all goths have one thing in common, it is a sensitivity to spirituality, tolerance and self-expression - beyond their sometimes intimidating attire, they are very open minded and accepting people.

What about you ?

Did you ever get called a Satanist for being interested in alternative subcultures ? What are the gothic stereotypes that annoy you the most ?
