Discover 5 Fantastic Beasts That Might ( Or Might Not ) Exist !

Today we’re letting you discover 5 lesser known majestic & frightening cryptids !

I am sure you’ve heard of mythic animals such as the Chupacabra or the Loch-Ness Monster, right ? The studies of such animals, both scary and intriguing, is called cryptozoology. Between serious scientific research and nebulous sightings, cryptozoologists have yet to confirm the existence of any of those beasts… but they do leave us wondering what might be hiding in the dark.

1 - The Ahool

The Ahool is a giant bat-like winged creature with the characteristics of a primate. The name “Ahool” is said to come from it’s loud and distinct cry. It is said to live in the deepest parts of the Indonesian jungle. The Ahool has distinct  features that resemble both a chimpanzee's and a bat’s with large dark eyes, red skinned wings, large claws, and is covered in grey fur. It is said to have a wingspan of up to 9 meters, which would make it ten times larger than the common bat.  A renowned scientist has claimed to have seen Ahools : Dr. Ernest Bartels. Whether this was fact or a very fertile imagination, we will never know !

2 - The Mothman

The Mothman is said to be the strangest thing ever witnessed in the state of Virginia. The first recorded Mothman sighting took place on November 12, 1966, near Clendenin, West Virginia. Five men were in a cemetery preparing a grave for burial when they saw the unexplainable brown winged creature. Sightings continued in Virginia and across the entire continent, reaching hundreds. The Mothman is described as a bipedal, winged humanoid. He is in no way moth-like, and has an appearance more like that of a large humanoid owl.

3 - The Olgoi-Khorkhoi

Known as the “Olgoi-Khorkhoi” which translates to “intestinal worm”, this cryptid is said to live in the Gobi desert in Mongolia. Mongolian legends report of the vicious nature of the beast, supposed to prey on both human and animals with his poison. This giant worm is said to move around like a serpent devoid of a distinct head or tail and is characterized by its bright red color. The legendary Olgoi-Khorkhoi was featured in a movie called “ Mongolian Death Worm” in 2010.

4 -The Bunyip

The Bunyip, whose name translates to “ devil” or “ evil spirit”  in Aboriginal Australian is a creature of Aboriginal mythology. It is said to live in swamps and creeks all over Australia. It’s appearance is highly debated, some say it has a dog-like face, dark fur, a horse-like tail, flippers, walrus-like tusks, and a duck-like bill. Others think the creature has an appearance similar to a snake with a man and a beard. Some even report sightings of a chimera-like beast with features of a bird and an alligator. Scientist George Rankins has reported a sighting of the Bunyip in the mid 1830s after discovering gigantic unidentified bones in an australian cave.

The Bunyip was featured in the eponymous horror movie telling the story of a group of city folk who have to survive against the legendary creature after encountering it during a hike.

5 - The Wendigo

Maybe the most renowned creature of this list, the Wendigo is a cannibalistic spirit resembling a zombie, living in Canada. The earliest description of the Wendigo was that of similar appearance to a corpse, with a skeleton-like, thin body with gray skin, sunken eyes, bloody lips, yellow fangs and a long, slimy tongue. According to an Alonquian legend, the gruesome creature can turn its victims into Wendigos - a bit like Vampires, but with more fur ! They are said to hide their true nature and disguise themselves amongst humans, then turn into their Wendigo form and viciously attack every living thing in their vicinity. Some even believe that many canadian criminals could be in fact, Wendigos…
