Hoia-Baciu Forest, Romania
Those who have wandered through the Hoia-Baciu forest in Romania have reported rashes, nausea, and feelings of anxiety, according to The Independent. Known as the "Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania," some believe it to be a portal into a parallel dimension that causes visitors to disappear. The absence of sunlight and spooky curved trees that populate the forest just add to the gloomy atmosphere. Named after a shepherd who went missing without a trace along with his sheep in the depth of its woods, Hoia-Baciu is renowned for being the spookiest forest in the world.
Proctor’s Ledge, Salem USA
In 1692, this small village of Essex County, Massachusetts, bore witness to America’s most lethal witch hunt. Over 200 women were accused, and nineteen ended up being executed and hung. It is said that the ghosts of the wrongly accused women still haunt the place to this day. Over the years, many accounts of paranormal activity have been documented in and around Proctor’s Ledge, from apparitions to objects moving on their own.
The Forbidden City, Beijing, China
This destination has quite the reputation among supernatural enthusiasts. During its 600-year tenure as a palace, the Forbidden City had its fair share of murders and executions. Needless to say, there have been many reports of strange phenomena since the palace opened to the public in the 1940s. Guards confessed to witnessing strange animals running quickly about the grounds late at night. One young man even admitted to seeing a crying woman, dressed in white, walking about the grounds and when he spoke to her from behind, she never heard him or turned around. Legends say that those ghostly apparitions are the reason why the Forbidden City never stays open to visitors at night time...
Leap Castle, Coolderry, Ireland
This Irish castle has seen so many gruesome murders it would be quite surprising if it wasn’t haunted, actually. Legends say that, during a struggle for power within the resident family, one member stabbed his priest brother with a sword as he was holding mass in the castle's chapel. The room is now called "The Bloody Chapel," and the priest is said to haunt the church at night. During renovations in the early 1900s, workers found a secret dungeon in the Bloody Chapel filled with human skeletons. The dungeon was designed so that prisoners would fall through a trap door and die a slow, horrific death.
LaLaurie House, New Orleans, USA
American Horror Story: Coven reignited interest in the gruesome story of Madame Delphine LaLaurie, who was inhabiting this house in the 19th century. Socialite and serial killer, Madame Delphine LaLaurie orchestrated a torture chamber for slaves at the mansion from 1831 until 1834, when responders to a fire uncovered her terrible secret. LaLaurie's victims are said to haunt the property to this day—passersby and visitors say they can hear shouts, moans and weeping, and some say they have seen ghostly faces from the upstairs windows.
